If you are looking for a mortgage or remortgage you might have heard that speaking to a mortgage adviser can be helpful but have been wondering ‘what does a mortgage broker do?’ and how they could be useful in helping you get a mortgage. As more complex rules have been developed around the taking out of a mortgage over 60% of home loans are now applied for via a broker.

What does a mortgage broker do?

A mortgage broker is a qualified professional who has an expert knowledge in the mortgage application process. They have an in-depth knowledge of different mortgages and work with the borrower to find them the mortgage that suits their specific requirements best.

An independent mortgage broker works for you and is on your side; this means you can get unbiased advice about mortgages from the whole of the market and not just a select pool, they will be able to negotiate with lenders on your behalf to try and secure you a better deal than if you applied alone. They can also help you with the protection process.

You may be wondering why you need an intermediary to act on your behalf however aside from providing you with expert advice on mortgages, a broker can access mortgages from specialist providers who are not on the high street and cannot be contacted directly by a potential borrower, these may be able to offer you a better deal than you could get with one of the big mainstream lenders.

Mortgages from specialist lenders can be especially useful for applicants who lenders on the high street might be more reluctant to accept for a mortgage for example contractors, self-employed persons or borrowers who have an adverse credit score.

Even some of the main lenders offer broker exclusive deals which may be better than their offerings to direct lenders.

Fair Mortgages can access over 5,000 mortgages from over 72 different lenders including broker exclusive deals whether you are looking to buy your first home, a holiday home or invest in a buy to let property.
